Meet Streetsboro - Lisa McDaniel Ward 4 City Councilwoman

"Meet Streetsboro" was a series started by the Gateway News when the paper covered Streetsboro. Streetsboro News is bringing that series back in an effort to get to know the people who make Streetsboro a great place to live and work.

Our first person on the "Meet Streetsboro" series is the new Ward 4 City Councilwoman, Lisa McDaniel. Lisa was elected in the November 7th, 2023 general election and was an unopposed candidate. Lisa takes over for former City Councilwoman, Julie Field, who decided to not seek reelection after 12 years in office.

What is your occupation?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist by training, but I have chosen to stay home in order to home educate our 6 children at this time.

How long have you lived in Streetsboro?

I have lived in Streetsboro for almost 18 years.

Position elected to?

Ward 4 City Council

Why did you run for local office?

I was encouraged by a local leader, councilwoman Julie Field, to do so! I am a thoughtful person committed to excellence with a heart for the city of Streetsboro, so the role of councilwoman is fitting.

How long have you been in office?

I was just elected and was sworn in on November 27th, 2023.

What is the biggest thing you have accomplished in your position? (If you have already served)

N/A - I look forward to truly representing my constituents!

What's the biggest thing you want to see happen or accomplish during your upcoming term?

I want to accomplish true representative government for the residents of Ward 4. The most important part of government is the people - we work for THEM!

How would you describe Streetsboro to someone who has never been here?

Streetsboro is a smattering of old and new, with the hustle and bustle of retail and industry among major roadways, and pockets of unexpectedly quiet country neighborhoods within the City limits. I would specifically describe Ward 4 as "rural convenience". Many of us choose to remain here due to the ability to have some land and live "out in the country" while only being a few moments away from retail and other services, in addition to being in close proximity to other, larger cities. It's the best of both worlds!

What is your favorite thing about, or favorite thing to do in Streetsboro?

My favorite thing is the rural aspect of where I live.

Tell us about your family.

I have been married to Eric for almost 15 years and together we have 6 children. Eric is an attorney and a huge supporter of everything that I do. My children are incredible and the absolute joy of my life. We have 4 daughters and identical twin sons, age 12 down to 4. I am very close with my mom and my dad passed away last year. It was my parents that originally purchased property in Streetsboro and established our little farm that we all love so dearly.

What are your hobbies?

I love to hobby farm and our family maintains large gardens and an orchard. We keep bees and chickens, and we preserve much of our own food. I also love to cook, play music, and dance.

This year, after the beloved tree that was always decorated and stood at the curve on Seasons Road was cut down, my family decided to plant and dedicate a new tree on our own private property at the corner of Seasons and Ravenna Road.  We wanted to continue the neighborhood legacy that brought joy to so many passersby.  We have enjoyed the responsibility of decorating the new "happy tree" as we call it.  So far the tree has been adorned with smiley faces, jack o'lanterns for Halloween, military flags in honor of Veterans' Day, turkeys and pilgrims for Thanksgiving, and now ornaments and lights for Christmas.  It's a fun, new tradition for our family and something simple that we know makes a lot of people smile when they drive by.

Who do you admire the most? (Excluding relatives)

Corrie ten Boom. Her courage, hope, and faith in Jesus Christ is nothing short of inspiring.

Interesting fact that most people don't know about you?

I'm a professional folk musician and have performed Appalachian and Celtic music with my sister all around the United States, as well as internationally, and was even hired by Walt Disney World in Florida to perform live for multiple seasons!

My sister and I actually host an old-time music jam at the Streetsboro Eagles Club on the second Sunday of every month that is open to musicians and listeners alike!  We had originally planned to host this monthly event at Streetsboro's historic Singletary House, but our kick-off event was so well-attended that we immediately exceeded the ability of Singletary House to host us!  We are so thankful that the Eagles Club was willing to open their doors for this free event that helps preserve tradition, build community, and welcome everyone into Streetsboro for good, clean fun once a month.

Look for future articles of the recently elected officials for the city and school!
